About Us

Patricia Cumper MA Cantab FRSL MBE

With over forty-five years working in the arts in both the Caribbean and the UK, I am experienced in the administration and governance of arts organisations.

As Artistic Director and CEO of Talawa Theatre Company, I brought the company back from the brink of closure and ensured it continued as a successful Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

Over the years, I have served on the boards of a number of arts organisations including English Touring Theatre, Spare Tyre and Utopia Theatre and am currently chair of the literary charity, The Arvon Foundation.  I also served as a trustee of the British Museum and sat on the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

While leading Talawa, I produced work in partnership with Leeds Playhouse, Hackney Empire and the Victoria and Albert Museum among other organisations. More recently, in partnership with Pauline Walker, I established a podcast and related website, The Amplify Project, exploring the work and artistic practice of Black British writers.  The podcasts are included in the British Library sound archive.

I also have a considerable body of work as an audio dramatist writing, adapting, abridging, producing and directing for the BBC.  My plays have been produced at the Riverside and Tara Arts in London, in New York and Toronto and throughout the Caribbean.  I have been published by Peepal Tree Press and Oberon Modern Plays.

Pauline Walker

I have had a long career in the media, literary and theatre industries working for the Alfred Fagon Award, Artistic Directors of the Future, BBC, Bush Theatre, Creative Youth, Eclipse Theatre, National Theatre Black Plays Archive, Queen Mary University of London Arts and Culture, Spare Tyre, Staging the Archive, StrongBack Productions, The London Hub of Sustained Theatre, and Wasafiri.

I am also an award-winning short story writer.  I have been published in anthologies, and commissioned to write by The Guardian, Tangle Theatre and StrongBack Productions. I was shortlisted for the SI Leeds Literary Prize, and I curate, produce and co-host the literary podcast The Amplify Project.  I have a BA (Hons) Literature 2:1 Open University.
